祭りが帰ってきた The festival is back

十年ぶりの太鼓 Drums for the first time in ten years

山やまの中なかの小ちいさな町まちで、十年じゅうねんぶりに夏祭なつまつりが復活ふっかつした。In a small town in the mountains, the summer festival came back for the first time in ten years.

過疎かそが進すすんで太鼓たいこや踊おどりの担にない手てがいなくなり、祭まつりは長ながい間あいだ中止ちゅうしされていたのだ。As depopulation progressed, there was no one left to play the drums or dance, so the festival had been cancelled for a long time.

久ひさしぶりの開催かいさいとあって、当日とうじつは町まちの人口じんこうの倍ばいを超こえる人ひとが集あつまり、会場かいじょうは熱気ねっきに包つつまれた。Because it was held for the first time in years, more than twice the town's population gathered on the day, and the venue was filled with excitement.

屋台やたいにも昼ひるから行列ぎょうれつができ、大変たいへんな盛況せいきょうだった。There were lines at the food stalls from midday, and it was a huge success.

祭まつりの存続そんぞくのために動うごいたのは、町まちを出でて都会とかいで働はたらく二十代にじゅうだいの若者わかものたちだ。The people who worked to keep the festival going were young people in their twenties who had left the town to work in the city.

中心ちゅうしんになった山田やまださんは「離はなれていても町まちへの愛着あいちゃくがあればこそ、毎週末まいしゅうまつ帰かえってきて練習れんしゅうを続つづけられた」と話はなす。Mr. Yamada, who led the group, says, "It's precisely because we're attached to the town, even living far away, that we could keep coming back every weekend to practice."

難むずかしかったのは太鼓たいこのリズムを継承けいしょうすることだった。昔むかしの打うち手てはもう高齢こうれいで、楽譜がくふも残のこっていなかった。The hard part was passing on the drum rhythms. The old drummers were already elderly, and no written music remained.

助たすけになったのは、十年前じゅうねんまえの最後さいごの祭まつりで、当時とうじ小学生しょうがくせいだった山田やまださん自身じしんがタブレットで撮とった動画どうがだ。What helped was a video that Mr. Yamada himself, then an elementary school student, shot on a tablet at the last festival ten years ago.

若者わかものたちはその動画どうがを何度なんども見みて、リズムを一ひとつずつ覚おぼえた。The young people watched the video again and again and learned the rhythms one by one.

もっとも、動画どうがの半分はんぶんには、太鼓たいこではなく撮とっている山田やまださん自身じしんの顔かおが映うつっていたそうだ。That said, apparently half of the video showed the face of Mr. Yamada himself, who was filming, instead of the drums.

来年らいねんは町まちの小学生しょうがくせいにも太鼓たいこを教おしえる予定よていだ。「今度こんどはカメラの向むきにも気きをつけます」と山田やまださんは笑わらった。Next year they plan to teach the drums to the town's elementary school children too. "This time I'll be careful about which way the camera is facing," Mr. Yamada said with a laugh.
