way of doing ~ / how to ~
Add 方 to the masu-stem of a verb to make a noun meaning "the way of doing ~" or "how to ~". Because the result is a noun, the object particle を changes to の (漢字の読み方, not 漢字を読み方). For する verbs like 勉強する, use 勉強の仕方. It can also describe someone's manner, as in 話し方 (way of speaking).
この漢字の読み方を教えてください。
Please tell me how to read this kanji.
駅までの行き方が分かりません。
I don't know how to get to the station.
start / finish / continue doing ~
Attach 始める, 終わる, or 続ける to the masu-stem to show that an action starts, finishes, or continues. 〜始める also works for non-human events, like rain starting to fall. 〜終わる is used with actions that have a clear end, such as reading, writing, or eating. The compound verbs conjugate like their last part: 始める and 続ける are ru-verbs, 終わる is an u-verb.
雨が降り始めました。傘を持って行きましょう。
It has started to rain. Let's take an umbrella.

最初の 日、わたしは 花を 短く 切りすぎて しまいました。On the first day, I cut the flowers too short.
でも 先生は 笑って、「短い 花は 小さい コップに 入れれば、かわいいですよ」と 言いました。But the teacher laughed and said, "If you put short flowers in a small cup, they look cute."
実は 子どもの ころ、ピアノも 絵も 途中で やめて しまいました。Actually, when I was a child, I gave up both piano and drawing halfway.
楽器は 練習が 大変だったし、絵は なかなか 上手に 描けなかったからです。That's because practicing the instrument was hard, and I just couldn't draw well.
でも 生け花は、花を 生け終わると 部屋が 明るく なって、いつも うれしい 気分に なります。But with ikebana, when I finish arranging the flowers, the room brightens up and I always feel happy.
先週は 先生に「マリアさんの 花は、毎週 少しずつ 長く なって いますね。切り方が 上手に なりましたね」と 言われました。Last week the teacher told me, "Maria, your flowers are getting a little longer every week. You've gotten better at cutting them."
今度こそ 途中で やめないで、ずっと 習い続けたいです。This time, I want to keep learning without quitting halfway.

She writes that she had long been interested in Japanese culture, so she tried a class near the station. It is the class that is near the station, not her home.
R2先生は どうして「花は、毎週 少しずつ 長く なって いますね」と 言いましたか。
答案: 1 マリアさんが 花を 短く 切りすぎなく なったから
On the first day, Maria cut the flowers too short. The teacher also says she has gotten better at cutting, so her flowers are getting longer because she no longer cuts them too short.
