Shows the source of information, such as the news, a weather forecast or what someone said. The sentence usually ends with a hearsay form such as そうだ, らしい or ということだ. によれば means almost the same. It is not used to give your own opinion.

  • Vた形 + とおり(に)
  • N + の + とおり(に)
  • N + どおり(に)

Means in the same way as something heard, seen or planned. Use Vる/Vた + とおり with verbs and Nのとおり with nouns. When attached directly to a noun, it becomes どおり (予定どおり). Use とおりに before a verb and とおりの before a noun.

    I practiced just as the teacher said, and I got a good score on the test.

佐藤暑あつそうだね。じゃあ、今日きょうはオーブンで焼やくお菓子かしじゃなくて、冷ひやして食たべるコーヒーゼリーを作つくろうか。Sounds hot. Then today, instead of a sweet we bake in the oven, why don't we make coffee jelly that we eat chilled?

リンいいですね。材料ざいりょうは、コーヒーと砂糖さとうとゼラチンだけですね。Good idea. The only ingredients are coffee, sugar, and gelatin, right?

佐藤そう。まず、砂糖さとうを量はかって。レシピには四十よんじゅうグラムと書かいてあるよ。That's right. First, measure the sugar. The recipe says 40 grams.

リン私わたしは甘あまいほうが好すきなので、もっと入いれてもいいですか。I like things sweeter, so can I put in more?

佐藤初はじめて作つくるときは、書かいてあるとおりにやったほうがいいよ。次つぎの手順てじゅんは、温あたためたコーヒーにゼラチンを入いれて、よく混まぜる。When you make something for the first time, it's better to do it just as it's written. The next step is to put the gelatin into the warmed coffee and mix it well.
