The height of ~ / ~ in the extreme
Attached to a noun, this written expression means that a state has reached its highest point. It works for good things (贅沢の極み, 感激の極み) and bad things (疲労の極み, 無責任の極み); about other people's actions it becomes strong criticism. Common forms are 〜の極みだ and 〜の極みに達する.
海の見えるホテルの部屋で朝食をとるなんて、贅沢の極みだ。
Having breakfast in a hotel room with a view of the sea is the height of luxury.
三日間ほとんど寝ずに働き、疲労の極みに達した。
After working for three days with almost no sleep, I reached the limit of exhaustion.
Nothing but ~ / entirely ~
Attached to a noun, it means everything around someone, or everything that happens, is of that one kind. One use is colors of clothing, as in 黒ずくめ (all in black). The other is a series of similar things, as in いいことずくめ, ごちそうずくめ, 規則ずくめ, 異例ずくめ. It can be used for good things and combines with a limited set of nouns.
今年は昇進も結婚も決まり、いいことずくめの一年だった。
This year I got promoted and engaged; it was a year full of good things.

こんなに運に恵まれた年はない。ただ、仕事は忙しく、疲労もずいぶんたまっていた。I have never had a year so blessed with luck. Still, work was busy, and a lot of fatigue had built up.
そこで、自分へのごほうびに、山の中の小さな旅館に一泊することにした。So, as a reward for myself, I decided to stay one night at a small inn in the mountains.
普段は浪費をしないよう気をつけているが、今回だけは特別だ。Usually I am careful not to waste money, but this time was special.
夕食には、地元の牛肉や新鮮な刺身が並ぶ豪華な料理が出た。旅館の人に「こちらもおすすめですよ」と言われるまま、料理もお酒も追加で頼んだ。For dinner, a luxurious meal with local beef and fresh sashimi was served. Going along with the inn staff, who kept saying, "This one is also recommended," I ordered extra food and drinks.
食後は露天風呂に入り、雪の山を眺めた。まさに贅沢の極みだ。After dinner I got into the outdoor bath and gazed at the snowy mountains. It was truly the height of luxury.
温泉と料理を満喫して布団に入ると、至福の気分のまま眠ってしまった。After fully enjoying the hot spring and the food, I got into my futon and fell asleep in a state of bliss.
ところが翌朝、会計で金額を見て、目がすっかり覚めた。予算の二倍だったのだ。But the next morning, when I saw the amount at checkout, I was suddenly wide awake. It was twice my budget.
吉報ずくめの一年は、最後に小さな悲報で締めくくられた。My year of nothing but good news ended with one small piece of bad news.
来年のごほうびは、メニューの値段をよく見てから頼むことにしよう。Next year, for my reward, I will check the prices on the menu carefully before ordering.
