までに marks a deadline: the action is done once at some point before that time. まで means an action or state continues up to that time. 五時まで働く means working until five; 五時までに来る means coming no later than five.

Exemplos

  • レポートは金曜日きんようびまでに出だしてください。

    Please hand in your report by Friday.

  • 三時さんじまでに、この仕事しごとを終おわらせてください。

    Please get this work finished by three o'clock.

〜かどうか

whether or not ~

Formação
  • V普通形 + かどうか
  • いA普通形 + かどうか
  • なA + かどうか(「だ」は付けない)
  • N + かどうか(「だ」は付けない)

Use this to put a yes-no question inside a sentence: 明日雨が降りますか becomes 明日雨が降るかどうか. Verbs such as 分かる, 知る, 聞く, 調べる, and 決める often follow. Do not put だ after na-adjectives or nouns. For questions with a question word (where, what, when), use 〜か instead of かどうか.

Exemplos

  • 明日あした雨あめが降ふるかどうか、まだ分わかりません。

    I don't know yet whether it will rain tomorrow.

  • この店みせがおいしいかどうか、一度いちど食たべてみましょう。

    Let's try eating here once to see whether this restaurant is good.

マリア昨日きのうの 夜よる、メールで 送おくったんですが、先生せんせいに 届とどいたか どうか 分わからないんです。まだ 返事へんじが ないので…。I sent it by email last night, but I don't know whether it reached the professor. I haven't gotten a reply yet...

山田木村きむら先生せんせいは 今週こんしゅう 出張しゅっちょうなんです。レポートの メールは この 事務室じむしつにも 届とどきますから、確認かくにんして みますね。Professor Kimura is on a business trip this week. Report emails also come to this office, so let me check.

山田ええと…、ありました。届とどいて いますよ。あれ? 同おなじ メールが 三回さんかいも 届とどいて いますね。Let's see... here it is. It has arrived. Huh? The same email came three times.
