A written expression that points out, somewhat critically, an undesirable tendency of a person or organization. Here きらい means 'tendency', not 'dislike'. It often appears with どうも, とかく or やや. It is not used for good habits or one-time events.
彼は人の話を最後まで聞かずに 判断するきらいがある。
He tends to make judgments without listening to people all the way through.
私は一度決めると、他の人の意見に耳を 貸さないきらいがある。
Once I decide something, I tend not to listen to other people's opinions.
While (one's main work), also ~ / beside ~
There are two uses. (1) Aかたわら、B: while doing a main activity A such as work or study, the same person also carries on another activity B over a long period. Unlike ながら, it cannot be used for two actions done at the same moment. (2) Nのかたわら(に) means 'right beside N', a literary expression of place.
田中さんは会社に 勤めるかたわら、週末に小説を書いている。
Mr. Tanaka works for a company while also writing novels on weekends.
マリアさんは大学での 研究のかたわら、子どもたちに英語を教えている。
Alongside her university research, Maria teaches English to children.
私は会社員として働くかたわら、週に二回、夜の大学院に通っている。研究のテーマは「大人の学び直し」だ。While working as an office employee, I attend graduate school at night twice a week. My research theme is "adults learning again."
日本の社会は、どの大学を出たかという学歴を偏重し、社会に出てからの学びを軽視するきらいがある。Japanese society tends to put too much weight on which university you graduated from and to make light of learning after you start working.
実際、入学を決めたとき、同僚に「今さら勉強してどうするの」と言われた。In fact, when I decided to enroll, a coworker said to me, "What's the point of studying now?"
