Do ~ completely / can't finish doing ~
~きる means doing something all the way to the end, or reaching a complete state (読みきる, 疲れきる). ~きれない means you cannot do it all because there is too much (食べきれない, 数えきれない). 待ちきれない expresses being too excited to wait.
この本は厚いけれど、一週間で 読みきった。
This book is thick, but I read the whole thing in a week.
料理が多すぎて、二人では 食べきれなかった。
There was too much food for the two of us to finish.
Half-done / be on the verge of ~
There are two uses. (1) An action was started but left unfinished. It is often used as ~かけの + noun: 読みかけの本 (a half-read book), 食べかけのパン. (2) Something is about to happen or has just begun to happen: 忘れかける (start to forget), 枯れかける (start to wither).
机の上に 読みかけの 本が置いてある。
There is a half-read book on the desk.
彼女は何か 言いかけて、やめた。
She started to say something, then stopped.
アリこの小説、長い物語だけど、おもしろくて一晩で読みきったよ。This novel is a long story, but it was so good I read it all in one night.
マリアあ、その作家の本、私も持ってる。でも、途中でやめて、読みかけのままなんだ。Oh, I have a book by that author too. But I stopped in the middle, and it's still half-read.
アリどうして? 最後まで読むと、すごく感動するのに。Why? It's really moving if you read it to the end.
マリア登場人物が多すぎて、名前を覚えきれなかったの。だれがだれだか分からなくなっちゃって。There were too many characters, and I couldn't remember all their names. I lost track of who was who.
アリそれなら、最初のページを見て。登場人物の名前が全部書いてあるよ。In that case, look at the first page. All the characters' names are written there.
マリアえっ、本当? …あ、ほんとだ。全然気づかなかった。What, really? ...Oh, you're right. I never noticed.
マリアじゃあ、今夜から読書の続きをするね。最後まで読みきったら、感想を話すよ。Then I'll go back to reading starting tonight. When I finish it, I'll tell you what I thought.
