Compared with ~
Compares two things and states the difference. AはBに比べて~ means about the same as A is more ~ than B, but is slightly more formal than より. と比べて is used the same way. It is followed by words of degree or change, such as many, expensive, easy or increased.
今年の夏は去年 に比べて 雨が少ないです。
Compared with last year, there has been less rain this summer.
東京は大阪 に比べて、家賃が高いと言われています。
It is said that rent in Tokyo is higher than in Osaka.
As ~ (in the role or capacity of ~)
Shows a role, status, qualification or category, meaning in the position of or in the role of. It is used for people and also for how things are used (used as a school). To modify a noun, use NとしてのN.
彼女は通訳 として 会議に参加しました。
She took part in the meeting as an interpreter.
この建物は、昔は学校 として 使われていました。
This building used to be used as a school.
田中では、留学生の代表として、アリさんにお話をしてもらいます。Now, Ali will speak to us as the representative of the international students.
アリみなさん、こんにちは。アリです。今日は交流会に参加できて、うれしいです。Hello, everyone. I'm Ali. I'm happy to be able to take part in today's exchange event.

アリ先月、初めて地元のお祭りに行きました。とてもいい経験になりました。Last month, I went to a local festival for the first time. It was a really good experience.
アリ私の国のお祭りに比べて、日本のお祭りは始まる時間が早いです。国のお祭りは、夜十時ごろに始まって、朝まで続きます。Compared with festivals in my country, Japanese festivals start early. Festivals back home start around 10 p.m. and go on until morning.
