な形容詞

Adjectives that take な before a noun

Formation
  • なA + です（静かです）
  • なA + な + N（静かな 町）
  • なA + じゃありません／ではありません（静かじゃありません）

な-adjectives are words like 静か (quiet), 元気 (healthy, lively), 有名 (famous), 便利 (convenient) and きれい (pretty, clean). At the end of a sentence they take です, just like nouns: 静かです. Before a noun they need な: 静かな 町 (a quiet town). The negative is also the same as for nouns: 静かじゃありません or 静かではありません. In conversation, 静かじゃないです is common too.

  • この 町まちは とても 静しずかです。

    This town is very quiet.

  • 京都きょうとは 有名ゆうめいな 町まちです。

    Kyoto is a famous city.

はるの 山やまは きれいです。はなも きれいです。The mountains are pretty in spring. The flowers are pretty, too.

なつは とても あついです。川かわの 水みずは きれいです。Summer is very hot. The river water is clean.

あきの 川かわは しずかです。山やまは あかいです。In autumn, the rivers are quiet. The mountains are red.

ふゆの 山やまは しろいです。とても さむいです。In winter, the mountains are white. It's very cold.

日本にほんは きれいな くにです。Japan is a beautiful country.
