Thanks to ~ (good result)
Used to say that something led to a good result, with a feeling of gratitude. The result that follows is positive. It can also end a sentence: 〜のおかげだ / 〜おかげです. Verbs are often in the ta-form, and when someone did something for you, 〜てくれたおかげで is common.
先生のおかげで、試験に合格できました。
Thanks to my teacher, I was able to pass the exam.
友だちが手伝ってくれたおかげで、引っ越しが早く終わった。
Thanks to my friends helping me, the move finished quickly.
Because of ~ (bad result, blame)
Used to say that something caused a bad result. It puts the responsibility on that cause and can sound like a complaint or blame. At the end of a sentence it becomes 〜のせいだ. 〜せいか means "perhaps because of ~" when you are not sure of the cause.
電車が遅れたせいで、会議に間に合わなかった。
Because the train was late, I didn't make it to the meeting in time.
雪のせいで、乗る予定だった飛行機が飛ばなかった。
Because of the snow, the plane I was supposed to take didn't fly.
マリアリンさん、試験の結果、見た? わたし、合格したよ!Lin, did you see the exam results? I passed!
リンおめでとう! マリアさん、毎日図書館で勉強していたもんね。Congratulations! You studied in the library every day, after all.
マリアありがとう。先生がずっと応援してくれたおかげで、最後まで頑張れたんだ。模試で失敗したときも、「大丈夫。努力は、ちゃんと力になっていますよ」と言ってくれたの。Thanks. Thanks to my teacher supporting me the whole time, I was able to keep going to the end. Even when I did badly on a practice test, my teacher said, "Don't worry. Your effort is really paying off."
