This strongly denies a possibility: "Considering the reasons, there's absolutely no way ~." It carries the speaker's strong feelings and is often used with こんなに, あんなに, or そんなに. Compared with わけではない ("not necessarily"), the denial is much stronger.

This means "I can't do ~ because of common sense, my position, or the situation." It is not about ability; it means the speaker feels it would be wrong to do it. With the ない form, 〜ないわけにはいかない means "I can't not do ~," that is, "I have to do ~ (even if I don't want to)."

土曜日の約束 Saturday's promise

土曜日どようびの朝あさ、田中たなかさんに佐藤さとうさんから電話でんわがかかってきた。「今日きょう、みんなで海うみに行いくんだけど、一緒いっしょにどう?」On Saturday morning, Tanaka got a phone call from Sato. "We're all going to the beach today. Want to come?"

でも田中たなかさんは、先週せんしゅうアリさんに引ひっ越こしの手伝てつだいを頼たのまれて、「いいよ」と約束やくそくしていた。田中たなかさんは、約束やくそくはかならず守まもる人ひとだ。But last week Ali had asked Tanaka to help with a move, and Tanaka had promised, "Sure." Tanaka is someone who always keeps promises.

「ごめん、今日きょうはアリさんの引ひっ越こしを手伝てつだう日ひなんだ。約束やくそくしたから、行いかないわけにはいかないよ。」"Sorry, today is the day I help Ali move. I promised, so I can't not go."

「そうだと思おもった。田中たなかさんが約束やくそくを破やぶるわけがないもんね。」と、佐藤さとうさんは笑わらった。"I thought so. There's no way you'd break a promise," Sato said with a laugh.

田中たなかさんは急いそいでアリさんのアパートに行いった。ところが、ドアを開あけたアリさんは、まだパジャマを着きていた。Tanaka hurried to Ali's apartment. But when Ali opened the door, Ali was still in pajamas.

「えっ、どうしたの?」と聞きくと、アリさんは何度なんども謝あやまった。「本当ほんとうにごめん!引ひっ越こしは来週らいしゅうの土曜日どようびなんだ。日ひにちを間違まちがえて伝つたえてしまった。」When Tanaka asked, "Huh, what's going on?", Ali apologized again and again. "I'm so sorry! The move is next Saturday. I told you the wrong date."

田中たなかさんがもう一度いちど佐藤さとうさんに電話でんわをして理由りゆうを話はなすと、佐藤さとうさんははじめは信しんじてくれなかった。「えっ、本当ほんとう?それなら、こっちに来くればいいよ。」When Tanaka called Sato again and explained the reason, Sato didn't believe it at first. "Really? Then just come over here."

「アリさんも一緒いっしょにどう?」と田中たなかさんが聞きくと、アリさんは「でも、迷惑めいわくをかけたし……」と下したを向むいた。When Tanaka asked, "Why don't you come too, Ali?", Ali looked down and said, "But I caused you trouble..."

「遠慮えんりょしないで。それに、約束やくそくは約束やくそくだから、来週らいしゅうはちゃんと手伝てつだいに行いくよ。」"Don't hold back. And a promise is a promise, so I'll come and help you properly next week."
