Formation
- 1グループ: ます形の い段 → あ段 + ない（書きます → 書かない、飲みます → 飲まない、話します → 話さない、待ちます → 待たない）
- 1グループ（〜います）: い → わ + ない（買います → 買わない、会います → 会わない）
- 2グループ: ます → ない（食べます → 食べない、見ます → 見ない）
- 3グループ: します → しない、来ます → 来ない
- 例外: あります → ない
Explanation
The ない-form is the plain (non-polite) negative of a verb, with the same meaning as 〜ません. It is used with friends and family: 行かない, 食べない. It is also the base for patterns such as 〜ないでください, 〜なければなりません and 〜なくてもいいです. How to make it depends on the verb group, so check the group first, as with the て-form. In Group 1, the sound before ます changes from the い-row to the あ-row (き → か, み → ま).

Notes
Verbs ending in 〜います take 〜わない (買います → 買わない, not 買あない). The ない-form of あります is simply ない, not あらない. 起きます, 見ます, 借ります and います are Group 2 verbs, so they become 起きない, 見ない, 借りない and いない.
