N5 Grammar 6/60

この・その・あの・どの

this, that, that over there, which (always before a noun)

Formation

  • この/その/あの/どの + N

Explanation

この, その, あの and どの must always be followed by a noun. The distance rules are the same as for これ, それ and あれ: この for something near the speaker, その for something near the listener, あの for something far from both, and どの to ask "which ~?". Unlike これ, they can also be used for people (この 人, あの 先生). この 本は 私のです and これは 私の 本です mean almost the same thing.

Examples

  • この 本ほんは 私わたしのです。

    This book is mine.

  • すみません、その かばんは いくらですか。

Excuse me, how much is that bag?

  • あの 人ひとは 日本語にほんごの 先生せんせいです。

That person over there is a teacher of Japanese.

  • 佐藤さとうさんの 車くるまは どの 車くるまですか。

    Which car is Sato-san's?

Notes

With no noun after it, use これ, それ, あれ or どれ: これは 私のです, not このは 私のです. Do not put の between この and the noun (not このの 本).

Mini quiz

1( ) かさは リンさんのです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 この

"This umbrella is Lin-san's." A noun (かさ) follows the blank, so この is needed. これ, それ and あれ stand alone and cannot come directly before a noun.

2( )は 私わたしの 辞書じしょです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 それ

"That is my dictionary." The blank is followed directly by は, not by a noun, so the stand-alone word それ is correct. この, その and あの always need a noun after them.

3A: 山田やまださんは ( )ですか。
B: あの 人ひとです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 どの 人ひと

A asks "Which person is Yamada-san?" and B answers "That person over there." どの must be followed by a noun, so どの 人 is correct. どの, この and その cannot be used alone before です.
