〜つつある

Be in the process of ~ (gradual change)

Formation

  • Vます形 + つつある

Explanation

This shows that a change is happening gradually right now. It is used with verbs of change, such as 増える, 減る, 変わる, 近づく, 回復する and 完成する. It is not used with action verbs like 食べる or 読む; use ている for those. It often appears in news and written explanations.

Examples

  • この町まちの人口じんこうは少すこしずつ 増ふえつつある。

The population of this town is gradually increasing.

  • 台風たいふうが日本にほんに 近ちかづきつつあります。

    A typhoon is approaching Japan.

  • 工事こうじが進すすみ、新あたらしい駅えきが 完成かんせいしつつある。

Construction is progressing, and the new station is nearing completion.

  • 働はたらき方かたについての考かんがえ方かたは、今いま 変かわりつつある。

Ideas about how people work are now changing.

Notes

Do not use it with actions that are not changes, as in ご飯を食べつつある. てきている has a similar meaning, but つつある is more formal.
