N1 Grammar 23/60

〜ところを

At a time when ~; despite ~; (caught) in the middle of ~

Formation

  • V普通形 + ところを
  • いA + ところを
  • なA + な + ところを
  • N + の + ところを

Explanation

ところを has two main uses. (1) Considering the other person's situation, 'at a time when ~ (sorry / thank you),' common in polite phrases like お忙しいところを and お休みのところを; with 本来なら〜べきところを it means 'although I really should have ~.' (2) 'In the middle of ~ / at the moment of ~,' followed by verbs like 見られる (be seen), 見つかる (be caught), 助けられる (be rescued) or 起こされる (be woken).

Examples

  • お忙いそがしいところを来きていただき、ありがとうございます。

Thank you for coming when you are so busy.

  • お休やすみのところを申もうし訳わけありません。急いそぎの連絡れんらくです。

I'm sorry to bother you on your day off. This is an urgent message.

  • 本来ほんらいなら直接ちょくせつお伺うかがいすべきところを、メールで失礼しつれいいたします。

I should really come to see you in person, but please excuse me for writing by email.

  • 教室きょうしつで居眠いねむりをしているところを先生せんせいに見みられてしまった。

The teacher saw me dozing off in class.

Notes

In use (1), を is often dropped: お忙しいところ、ありがとうございます. ところに/ところへ mean something else happens at that moment, while ところを means an action is done to that scene or situation.

Mini quiz

1お疲つかれの( )、手伝てつだっていただいて本当ほんとうに助たすかりました。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 ところを

"Thank you so much for helping me when you were tired." ところを shows thanks for acting despite the other person's situation. ところで changes the topic, and ものの / わりに do not fit a thank-you sentence.

2道みちで危あぶない( )、近ちかくにいた人ひとに助たすけてもらった。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 ところを

"When I was in danger on the street, a person nearby helped me." 危ないところを助ける is a typical pattern. うえに (in addition), あまり (so much that) and くせに (even though, critical) do not fit.

3寝ねている( )電話でんわで起おこされて、少すこし機嫌きげんが悪わるい。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 ところを

"I was woken by a phone call while I was sleeping, so I'm a bit grumpy." ところを + 起こされる is natural. ばかりに (just because), とたんに (needs the ta-form) and ついでに (while doing something else) do not fit.
