Finish doing completely; do something by mistake (regret)
〜てしまう has two uses. One is completion: doing something completely, to the end (宿題を全部やってしまいました, I finished all my homework). It often appears with 全部 or もう. The other is regret: you did something you did not mean to do, or something unfortunate happened (財布を落としてしまいました, I lost my wallet). The context tells you which meaning is intended.
この 本は 昨日 全部 読んで しまいました。
I finished reading this whole book yesterday.
電車の 中に かさを 忘れて しまいました。
I left my umbrella on the train.
Do in advance (as preparation); leave something as it is
〜ておく has two uses. One is preparation: doing something in advance with a later need in mind (旅行の前にホテルを予約しておきます, I'll book a hotel before the trip). This includes putting things back after use. The other is leaving something as it is, without changing its present state (窓は開けておいてください, Please leave the window open). In both cases it is used for actions that a person does on purpose.
旅行の 前に、ホテルを 予約して おきます。
I'll book a hotel before the trip.
友だちが 来るから、部屋を 掃除して おきました。
A friend is coming, so I cleaned my room beforehand.
先月、マリアさんは 一人で 北海道へ 旅行に 行きました。Last month, Maria went on a trip to Hokkaido by herself.
出発の 前に、準備を しっかり しました。ホテルは 一か月 前に 予約して おきました。Before leaving, she prepared carefully. She booked the hotel a month ahead.
空港へ 行く 特急の 時間も 調べて、切符も 買って おきました。She also checked the times of the express train to the airport and bought the ticket in advance.
前の 日の 夜には、スーツケースに 服や カメラを 入れて おきました。The night before, she packed her clothes and camera in her suitcase.
でも、旅行の 日の 朝、駅に 着いた とき、切符が ありませんでした。家から 駅までの 道で、ポケットから 落として しまったのです。But on the morning of the trip, when she got to the station, her ticket wasn't there. She had dropped it from her pocket on the way from home to the station.
「困った。飛行機に 遅れて しまう!」'Oh no. I'm going to miss my flight!'
その とき、駅の 人が 切符を 持って 走って 来ました。「これ、駅の 前に ありましたよ。」Just then, a station worker came running with her ticket. 'This was in front of the station.'
マリアさんは 早く 家を 出て いましたから、特急にも 飛行機にも 間に合いました。Maria had left home early, so she made it in time for both the express train and the plane.
次の 旅行では、切符を 財布に 入れて おきたいと 思って います。On her next trip, she wants to keep her ticket in her wallet.
