  • V(う段 → え段) + ば: かく → かけば、いそぐ → いそげば
  • V(る → れば): たべる → たべれば、みる → みれば
  • する → すれば、くる → くれば
  • Vない形(ない → なければ): いかない → いかなければ
  • いA(い → ければ): たかい → たかければ、いい → よければ
  • なA / N + なら(ば)

A ば B states the condition A that is needed for B. It is common for general truths and for what will happen. どうすればいいですか is a set phrase for asking advice. When A is an action verb, B should not be a request or invitation, but this is fine when A is a state such as ある or an adjective.

    If you hurry, you'll make the nine o'clock train.

  • 天気てんきが よければ、ここから 山やまが よく 見みえます。

    If the weather is good, you can see the mountains well from here.

(1) Picking up what someone said or the situation, なら gives advice or an opinion: 京都へ行くなら、秋がいいですよ (if you're going to Kyoto, autumn is best). The advice is about before going. (2) Noun + なら answers about a topic the other person raised: 田中さんなら、図書館にいましたよ (as for Tanaka, he was in the library).

  • A「来月らいげつ、京都きょうとへ 行いきたいんです。」
    B「京都きょうとへ 行いくなら、秋あきが いいですよ。」

    A: I want to go to Kyoto next month. B: If you're going to Kyoto, autumn is the best time.

  • 寒さむいなら、エアコンを つけましょうか。

    If you're cold, shall I turn on the heater?

リンはい。品物しなものが たくさん ありますね。どれを 買かえば いいですか。Yes. There are so many products. Which one should I buy?

店員お一人ひとりなら、この 二ふたつが いいですよ。比くらべれば、違ちがいが すぐ 分わかります。If it's just for you, these two are good. If you compare them, you'll see the difference right away.

リンあ、値段ねだんが ずいぶん 違ちがいますね。Oh, the prices are quite different.

店員こちらは 少すこし 高たかいですが、とても 丈夫じょうぶなんです。店みせで 一度いちど 落おとして みましたが、壊こわれませんでした。This one is a little expensive, but it's very sturdy. We tried dropping it once in the store, and it didn't break.

リンえっ、本当ほんとうですか。実じつは、私わたしは よく ものを 落おとすんです。Really? Actually, I often drop things.

店員それなら、特とくに こちらが おすすめです。説明せつめいも この 紙かみに 書かいて あります。In that case, I especially recommend this one. The instructions are written on this sheet, too.

リンじゃあ、こちらを ください。カードで 払はらえますか。Then I'll take this one. Can I pay by card?
