〜ようと思う

I'm thinking of doing ~; I've decided to ~

接續
  • V意向形 + と思う
  • V意向形 + と思っている

Volitional form + と思う tells what the speaker has decided or is planning to do. It sounds more decided than 〜たいです, which is only a wish. 〜ようと思います can express a decision made just now. 〜ようと思っています shows an intention the speaker has had for some time and still has. To talk about another person's intention, use 〜ようと思っています.

例句

  • 今日きょうは 疲つかれたから、早はやく 寝ねようと思おもいます。

    I'm tired today, so I think I'll go to bed early.

  • 週末しゅうまつは 部屋へやの 掃除そうじを しようと思おもいます。

    I'm thinking of cleaning my room this weekend.

〜つもりだ

intend to ~; plan to ~

  • Vない形 + つもりだ

つもり expresses a plan or intention that someone has already decided in their mind. It sounds firmer than 〜ようと思う. The usual negative is 〜ないつもりだ (intend not to ~). You can ask about someone's plans with 〜つもりですか.

例句

  • 来年らいねん、日本語にほんごの 試験しけんを 受うけるつもりです。

    I intend to take the Japanese exam next year.

  • 今年ことしの 夏なつは どこへも 行いかないつもりです。

    I'm not planning to go anywhere this summer.

私わたしは 国くにの 日本語学校にほんごがっこうで 二年にねん 勉強べんきょうしました。来月らいげつ、この 学校がっこうを 卒業そつぎょうします。I have studied at a Japanese language school in my country for two years. Next month, I will graduate from this school.

来年らいねんの 春はるから、日本にほんの 大学だいがくに 留学りゅうがくしようと 思おもっています。I'm thinking of studying abroad at a university in Japan from next spring.

大学だいがくでは、日本にほんの アニメの 歴史れきしを 勉強べんきょうする つもりです。At university, I intend to study the history of Japanese anime.

でも、その 前まえに 大学だいがくの 試験しけんに 合格ごうかくしなければなりません。But before that, I have to pass the university entrance exam.

それで、毎日まいにちの 計画けいかくを 決きめました。朝あさは 六時ろくじに 起おきて、一時間いちじかん 漢字かんじを 勉強べんきょうします。So I decided on a daily plan. In the morning, I will get up at six and study kanji for an hour.

夜よるは 日本にほんの アニメを 見みながら、新あたらしい ことばを 覚おぼえます。In the evening, I will learn new words while watching Japanese anime.

この 計画けいかくを 先生せんせいに 見みせました。先生せんせいは「アニメは 一日いちにち 一時間いちじかんだけですよ」と 言いいました。I showed this plan to my teacher. My teacher said, 'Only one hour of anime a day.'

じつは、今いまは 毎晩まいばん 三時間さんじかんぐらい 見みています。でも、試験しけんまで 一日いちにち 一時間いちじかんしか 見みない つもりです。Actually, I watch about three hours every night now. But until the exam, I intend to watch only one hour a day.

将来しょうらいは、日本にほんの アニメの 会社かいしゃで 働はたらきたいです。それが 私わたしの 大おおきな 目標もくひょうです。In the future, I want to work at a Japanese anime company. That is my big goal.

試験しけんまで あと 半年はんとしです。明日あしたから 頑張がんばろうと 思おもいます!There are six months left until the exam. I'm going to work hard starting tomorrow!
