On the occasion of ~; when doing ~ (formal)
Used for a special or important event such as entering a school, signing a contract, or departing: "at the time of / on the occasion of ~." It is formal and common in notices, speeches, and business documents. In writing it often becomes に際し, and before a noun it becomes に際しての. It is not used for small everyday actions like eating or commuting.
入会に際して、こちらの用紙にお名前とご住所をご記入ください。
When joining, please write your name and address on this form.
海外へ出発するに際して、パスポートの期限を確認した。
Before leaving for abroad, I checked the expiration date of my passport.
When starting ~; in preparation for ~ (formal)
Used when starting something important, such as opening a shop, studying abroad, or a new year: "when / in preparation for ~." What follows is often preparation, resolve, or a greeting. It is formal; にあたり is also used in writing. It is close to に際して, but にあたって has a forward-looking feeling of getting ready for what is about to begin.
新しい店を開くにあたって、近所の人たちの意見を聞いた。
In preparation for opening the new shop, we asked people in the neighborhood for their opinions.
試験を始めるにあたって、注意点を説明します。
Before we begin the exam, I will explain some points to be careful about.
佐藤リンさん、ようこそ。人事の佐藤です。Welcome, Lin. I'm Sato from Human Resources.
リンよろしくお願いします。日本での初めての就職なので、朝から少し緊張しています。Nice to meet you. This is my first job in Japan, so I've been a little nervous since this morning.
佐藤大丈夫ですよ。まず、入社に際して提出していただく書類を説明しますね。Don't worry. First, I'll explain the documents we'd like you to submit on joining the company.
佐藤契約書、住所を書く用紙、給料を振り込む口座の書類の三つです。There are three: the contract, a form for your address, and a form for the bank account your salary will be paid into.
リン名前を書く前に、契約の内容を確認してもいいですか。May I check the contents of the contract before I sign it?
佐藤もちろんです。手続きは今週中に終われば大丈夫ですから、ゆっくり読んでください。Of course. It's fine if the paperwork is finished within this week, so please read it carefully.
佐藤それから、仕事を始めるにあたって、確認してほしいことが二つあります。Also, before you start working, there are two things I'd like you to check.
佐藤一つは、毎朝この社員証で入口のドアを開けること。もう一つは、困ったときは、まず隣の席の田中さんに聞くことです。One is to open the entrance door with this staff ID card every morning. The other is to ask Tanaka at the next desk first when you have a problem.
リン田中さんですね。どんな方ですか。Tanaka, right? What kind of person is Tanaka?
佐藤とても優しい人ですよ。実は去年の新入社員の中で、いちばん緊張していたのは田中さんでした。A very kind person. Actually, among last year's new employees, the most nervous one was Tanaka.
リンそれを聞いて安心しました。では、改めてよろしくお願いします。That's a relief to hear. Well then, once again, I look forward to working with you.

I'd like to get a job at a Japanese company after graduating. 会社に就職する means to start working at a company. 提出する needs something to hand in, 契約する is used as 会社と契約する, and 緊張 makes no sense here.

Please submit the report to the teacher by Friday. Handing in a report or document is 提出する. The other words make no sense here.

答案: 1 改めて
I will contact you again tomorrow about this matter. 改めて means 'again, at another time'. ちっとも needs a negative, and たまたま and せっかく do not fit a promise to act.
4海外へ出発する( )、パスポートの期限を確認しておきましょう。
答案: 3 にあたって
Before leaving for abroad, let's check the passport's expiry date. V-dictionary form + にあたって means 'in preparation for doing'. The other forms cannot follow a verb's dictionary form directly.
5工場を見学する( )、次の点に注意してください。
答案: 4 に際して
When touring the factory, please pay attention to the following points. 〜に際して is a formal way to say 'when doing ~', often used in notices. The other three do not make sense here.
6留学( )、両親に長い手紙を書いた。
答案: 1 に際して
On going abroad to study, I wrote a long letter to my parents. With a noun, use N + に際して. の際して and を際して do not exist, and に際する must be followed by a noun.
7来月、新しい部屋の契約をします。
答案: 3 けいやく
契約 is read けいやく (contract). The sentence means 'I will sign the contract for a new room next month.'
8面接の前は、いつもきんちょうします。
答案: 2 緊張
きんちょう is written 緊張 (nervousness). The sentence means 'I always get nervous before an interview.' Do not confuse 張 with 帳 or 長.
