〜に際して

On the occasion of ~; when doing ~ (formal)

Formación
  • N + に際して
  • V辞書形 + に際して
  • N + に際しての + N

Used for a special or important event such as entering a school, signing a contract, or departing: "at the time of / on the occasion of ~." It is formal and common in notices, speeches, and business documents. In writing it often becomes に際し, and before a noun it becomes に際しての. It is not used for small everyday actions like eating or commuting.

  • 入会にゅうかいに際さいして、こちらの用紙ようしにお名前なまえとご住所じゅうしょをご記入きにゅうください。

    When joining, please write your name and address on this form.

  • 海外かいがいへ出発しゅっぱつするに際さいして、パスポートの期限きげんを確認かくにんした。

    Before leaving for abroad, I checked the expiration date of my passport.

〜にあたって

When starting ~; in preparation for ~ (formal)

  • N + にあたっての + N

Used when starting something important, such as opening a shop, studying abroad, or a new year: "when / in preparation for ~." What follows is often preparation, resolve, or a greeting. It is formal; にあたり is also used in writing. It is close to に際して, but にあたって has a forward-looking feeling of getting ready for what is about to begin.

  • 新あたらしい店みせを開ひらくにあたって、近所きんじょの人ひとたちの意見いけんを聞きいた。

    In preparation for opening the new shop, we asked people in the neighborhood for their opinions.

佐藤リンさん、ようこそ。人事じんじの佐藤さとうです。Welcome, Lin. I'm Sato from Human Resources.

リンよろしくお願ねがいします。日本にほんでの初はじめての就職しゅうしょくなので、朝あさから少すこし緊張きんちょうしています。Nice to meet you. This is my first job in Japan, so I've been a little nervous since this morning.

佐藤大丈夫だいじょうぶですよ。まず、入社にゅうしゃに際さいして提出ていしゅつしていただく書類しょるいを説明せつめいしますね。Don't worry. First, I'll explain the documents we'd like you to submit on joining the company.

佐藤契約書けいやくしょ、住所じゅうしょを書かく用紙ようし、給料きゅうりょうを振ふり込こむ口座こうざの書類しょるいの三みっつです。There are three: the contract, a form for your address, and a form for the bank account your salary will be paid into.

リン名前なまえを書かく前まえに、契約けいやくの内容ないようを確認かくにんしてもいいですか。May I check the contents of the contract before I sign it?

佐藤もちろんです。手続てつづきは今週中こんしゅうちゅうに終おわれば大丈夫だいじょうぶですから、ゆっくり読よんでください。Of course. It's fine if the paperwork is finished within this week, so please read it carefully.

佐藤それから、仕事しごとを始はじめるにあたって、確認かくにんしてほしいことが二ふたつあります。Also, before you start working, there are two things I'd like you to check.

佐藤一ひとつは、毎朝まいあさこの社員証しゃいんしょうで入口いりぐちのドアを開あけること。もう一ひとつは、困こまったときは、まず隣となりの席せきの田中たなかさんに聞きくことです。One is to open the entrance door with this staff ID card every morning. The other is to ask Tanaka at the next desk first when you have a problem.

リン田中たなかさんですね。どんな方かたですか。Tanaka, right? What kind of person is Tanaka?

佐藤とても優やさしい人ひとですよ。実じつは去年きょねんの新入社員しんにゅうしゃいんの中なかで、いちばん緊張きんちょうしていたのは田中たなかさんでした。A very kind person. Actually, among last year's new employees, the most nervous one was Tanaka.

リンそれを聞きいて安心あんしんしました。では、改あらためてよろしくお願ねがいします。That's a relief to hear. Well then, once again, I look forward to working with you.
