No sooner had A happened than B happened
A が早いか B means that B happened almost at the same moment as A, without waiting for A to finish. It describes quick actions or reactions. B is normally a fact that actually happened in the past, so it cannot be a wish, intention, command or request. It is a fairly formal, literary expression used in novels and written reports.
ベルが 鳴るが早いか、生徒たちは教室を飛び出した。
The moment the bell rang, the students rushed out of the classroom.
息子は家に 帰ってくるが早いか、かばんを置いて遊びに行ってしまった。
No sooner had my son come home than he dropped his bag and went out to play.
The moment A happened, B happened
A や否や B means that B happened at the very moment A happened. B is often a reaction triggered by A or something unexpected. B must be a past fact, not an intention, command or request. 否や can be dropped, leaving just や. It is a formal written expression often seen in news articles and novels.
社長が会議室に 入ってくるや否や、全員が立ち上がった。
The moment the president entered the meeting room, everyone stood up.
新しいゲームは 発売されるや否や、数時間で売り切れた。
As soon as the new game was released, it sold out within a few hours.
土曜日の朝、駅前の洋菓子店に長い列ができた。この日から、一日二百個だけの限定プリンが売り出されるのだ。On Saturday morning, a long line formed at the pastry shop in front of the station. Starting that day, a limited pudding, only 200 a day, was going on sale.
