Do ~ (command from parent, teacher, etc.)

  • Vます形 + なさい

〜なさい is a command used by someone in a higher position to someone lower, such as a parent to a child or a teacher to a student. It is softer than the plain imperative (行け, 食べろ), but you cannot use it toward superiors. It also appears in test instructions like 答えなさい (Answer) and 選びなさい (Choose).

  • （母ははが 子こどもに）もう 十時じゅうじよ。早はやく 寝ねなさい。

    (Mother to child) It's already ten o'clock. Go to bed now.

  • 次つぎの 文ぶんを 読よんで、質問しつもんに 答こたえなさい。

命令形・禁止形

Imperative (do!) and prohibitive (don't!) forms

  • 命令形 Ⅰグループ: 辞書形の最後の音を え段 に（書く→書け、待つ→待て）
  • 命令形 Ⅱグループ: V辞書形 − る + ろ（食べる→食べろ、見る→見ろ）
  • 命令形 Ⅲグループ: する→しろ、来る→来い（こい）
  • 禁止形: V辞書形 + な（行くな、食べるな）

The imperative form (〜しろ) is a strong command and the prohibitive form (〜するな) is a strong "don't." They sound rough, so they are rare in ordinary conversation. They are common in emergencies, cheering at sports (がんばれ), road signs (止まれ), and when quoting someone's words, as in 早く寝ろと言われた (I was told to go to bed).

標識ひょうしきは おこっている？ Are the signs angry?

お{母|かあ}さんゆうた、明日あしたから自転車じてんしゃで学校がっこうに行いくのね。交通こうつうの規則きそくを守まもって、車くるまに注意ちゅういしなさいね。Yuta, you're going to school by bike from tomorrow, right? Follow the traffic rules and watch out for cars.

ゆうた分わかってるよ。あ、お母かあさん、あの赤あかい標識ひょうしきには何なんて書かいてあるの？I know. Oh, Mom, what does that red sign say?

お{母|かあ}さん「止とまれ」よ。ここを通とおる人ひとは一度いちど止とまりなさい、という意味いみ。It says "Stop." It means that people passing here must stop once.

ゆうたじゃあ、あの細ほそい道みちの「入はいるな」は？Then what about "Do not enter" on that narrow road?

お{母|かあ}さん車くるまや自転車じてんしゃは、あの道みちに入はいってはいけないという意味いみ。禁止きんしの標識ひょうしきね。It means cars and bikes must not go onto that road. It's a sign that prohibits something.

ゆうた標識ひょうしきって、いつもおこっているみたいだね。Signs always seem to be angry, don't they?

お{母|かあ}さんおこっているんじゃないわ。運転うんてんする人ひとも歩あるく人ひとも、危険きけんから守まもっているのよ。They aren't angry. They protect both drivers and people on foot from danger.

ゆうたじゃあ、お母かあさんの「早はやく寝ねなさい」も、ぼくを守まもっているの？Then is your "Go to bed early" also protecting me, Mom?
