While doing ~ (two actions at the same time)

  • Vます形 + ながら

A ながら B means that one person does two actions at the same time. B, the verb at the end, is the main action, and A is what the person is doing along with it. Tense and negation are shown only on the final verb. It is also used for two things continued over a long period, as in 働きながら大学で勉強しています (I study at university while working).

例句

  • 音楽おんがくを 聞ききながら、宿題しゅくだいを します。

    I do my homework while listening to music.

  • 歩あるきながら スマホを 見みては いけません。

    You must not look at your phone while walking.

And what's more; lists several reasons or qualities

  • N普通形 + し（雨あめだし）

〜し、〜し lists two or more points that go in the same direction, with the feeling of "and what's more." Use it to list good (or bad) qualities of a person or thing (安いし、おいしいし) or to give several reasons for a conclusion. The particle も is often used with it (お金もないし、時間もないし). A single し suggests that there are other reasons too. In polite speech, 〜ますし and 〜ですし are also possible.

例句

  • この 店みせは 安やすいし、おいしいし、よく 来きます。

    This restaurant is cheap, and the food is good too, so I come here often.

  • 今日きょうは 雨あめだし、寒さむいし、どこへも 行いきたくないです。

    It's rainy today, and it's cold too, so I don't want to go anywhere.

マリアいい アルバイトは ありましたか。Did you find a good one?

リンはい、駅前えきまえの カフェを 選えらびました。店員てんいんの 仕事しごとです。Yes, I chose a cafe in front of the station. It's a job as a clerk.

マリアどうして その 店みせを 選えらんだんですか。Why did you choose that shop?

リン給料きゅうりょうも いいし、駅えきから 近ちかいし、経験けいけんが ない 人ひとも 働はたらけるんです。The pay is good, it's close to the station, and people with no experience can work there.

マリアでも、カフェの 仕事しごとは 楽らくじゃないですよ。私わたしも 前まえに して いました。But cafe work isn't easy, you know. I used to do it, too.

リン大丈夫だいじょうぶです。将来しょうらい、小ちいさい カフェを 始はじめたいんです。I'll be fine. In the future, I want to open a small cafe.

マリアへえ、すごいですね。理由りゆうは それだけですか。Wow, that's great. Is that the only reason?

リン……実じつは、仕事しごとの 後あとで、残のこった ケーキが 安やすく 買かえるんです。...Actually, after work, I can buy the leftover cakes cheaply.
