about to / in the middle of / have just done ~

ところ shows which stage an action is at, and the meaning depends on the verb form. Dictionary form + ところだ means "about to do"; ~ている + ところだ means "in the middle of doing"; ta-form + ところだ means "have just done". It often appears with これから, 今, or ちょうど.

I'm just about to eat dinner.

I'm in the middle of writing the report for the department manager.

I've just arrived at the airport.

Class is about to start, so I'm going to hang up.

注意

Ta-form + ところだ is only for something that happened moments ago. If you feel something is recent even though some time has passed, use 〜たばかり.

B says no and これから, so B has not eaten yet. Just before an action, use the dictionary form + ところ. "Have you eaten dinner yet?" "No, I'm just about to eat."

B answers yes, so the meeting has ended. Right after an action, use the ta-form + ところ. "Has the meeting finished?" "Yes, it has just finished."

About half is done, so the cooking is still in progress. For "in the middle of", use ~ている + ところ. "I'm in the middle of cooking, and it's about half done."
