Placed at the start of a sentence to show the speaker's feeling about what follows. It is used with emotion words such as 驚いた, うれしい, 残念な, 困った, 不思議な and ありがたい. The rest of the sentence states a fact that actually happened. It is somewhat formal and common in writing and speeches.
例句
驚いたことに、十年前の先生が私の名前を覚えていてくれた。
To my surprise, my teacher from ten years ago remembered my name.
うれしいことに、私たちの企画が社長に認められた。
To our delight, our plan was approved by the company president.
残念なことに、楽しみにしていた旅行が台風で中止になった。
Unfortunately, the trip I was looking forward to was canceled because of a typhoon.
困ったことに、駅に着いてから財布を忘れたことに気づいた。
To my dismay, it was only after arriving at the station that I realized I had forgotten my wallet.
注意
It cannot be used with words that do not express feelings, and the rest of the sentence cannot be an intention, request or command.
