คำอธิบาย

Placed at the start of a sentence to show the speaker's feeling about what follows. It is used with emotion words such as 驚いた, うれしい, 残念な, 困った, 不思議な and ありがたい. The rest of the sentence states a fact that actually happened. It is somewhat formal and common in writing and speeches.

ตัวอย่าง

  • 驚おどろいたことに、十年じゅうねん前まえの先生せんせいが私わたしの名前なまえを覚おぼえていてくれた。

    To my surprise, my teacher from ten years ago remembered my name.

  • うれしいことに、私わたしたちの企画きかくが社長しゃちょうに認みとめられた。

    To our delight, our plan was approved by the company president.

  • 残念ざんねんなことに、楽たのしみにしていた旅行りょこうが台風たいふうで中止ちゅうしになった。

    Unfortunately, the trip I was looking forward to was canceled because of a typhoon.

  • 困こまったことに、駅えきに着ついてから財布さいふを忘わすれたことに気きづいた。

    To my dismay, it was only after arriving at the station that I realized I had forgotten my wallet.

ข้อควรรู้

It cannot be used with words that do not express feelings, and the rest of the sentence cannot be an intention, request or command.

Thankfully, the wallet I lost was found. With an い-adjective, use the plain form: ありがたいことに.

Strangely, the phone didn't ring even once that day. With a な-adjective, add な: 不思議なことに.

Unfortunately, the restaurant I had booked was closed today. ことに introduces the speaker's feeling before the fact. The other choices do not fit in meaning or form.
