Not only ~ but also ~
A formal version of 〜だけでなく, used in writing and speeches. It adds something wider to the first point, and the second part often has も or まで. It is common when the scope widens, as in 日本のみならず世界でも. It can also begin a sentence as a conjunction:
This problem is common not only to Japan but to many countries around the world.
Not only does he work fast, he also makes few mistakes.
Not only ~ but even ~
It means "not only ~ but even ~"; the second part is something bigger or more surprising, often with も, まで or さえ. It is often used to pile up bad things, but can also be used for good things. It is less stiff than のみならず but still somewhat written; in conversation, 〜だけじゃなく sounds more natural.
Not only did he forget his homework, he even left his textbook at home.
This room is not only small but also gets no sunlight.
Plastic litter in the ocean has become a serious problem all over the world.
This litter affects not only sea creatures but also people's lives.
For example, sea turtles sometimes mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them.
Also, fish eat tiny pieces of plastic, and people eat those fish.
What's more, ocean pollution is said not only to be failing to decrease but to be spreading year by year.
This is because plastic hardly breaks down in nature.
Recently, on a beach in one town, someone found a snack bag that had been sold more than thirty years ago.
Apparently, the writing and pictures on the bag could still be seen clearly.
So now, many towns and companies are working to reduce plastic waste.
Bringing your own bag when shopping not only protects the ocean environment but also helps save oil, a natural resource.
So that the litter we throw away today is not found on a beach thirty years from now, I want to start with small steps.
