คำอธิบาย
Attach 始める, 終わる, or 続ける to the masu-stem to show that an action starts, finishes, or continues. 〜始める also works for non-human events, like rain starting to fall. 〜終わる is used with actions that have a clear end, such as reading, writing, or eating. The compound verbs conjugate like their last part: 始める and 続ける are ru-verbs, 終わる is an u-verb.

I finished reading the book I borrowed from the library yesterday.

When you finish eating, please wash the dishes.

Normally you do not say 〜始まる (×読み始まる). Use 始める, even for things like rain.
