ရှင်းလင်းချက်
Attach 始める, 終わる, or 続ける to the masu-stem to show that an action starts, finishes, or continues. 〜始める also works for non-human events, like rain starting to fall. 〜終わる is used with actions that have a clear end, such as reading, writing, or eating. The compound verbs conjugate like their last part: 始める and 続ける are ru-verbs, 終わる is an u-verb.

It has started to rain. Let's take an umbrella.
図書館で借りた本を、昨日読み終わりました。
I finished reading the book I borrowed from the library yesterday.
父は三十年、同じ会社で働き続けています。
My father has kept working at the same company for thirty years.
食べ終わったら、お皿を洗ってください。
When you finish eating, please wash the dishes.

Normally you do not say 〜始まる (×読み始まる). Use 始める, even for things like rain.

From morning to night and for ten hours show the action continued, so 歩き続けました fits. 続ける attaches to the masu-stem, not the te-form. "I kept walking for ten hours, from morning to night."
