間 and 間に are used differently. 〜間 means "the whole time from start to finish", so the main clause is a continuing action or state, often ずっと〜ていた. 〜間に means "at some point within that time", so the main clause is an action that happens once and is completed.
I was back in my home country for the whole summer vacation.
I was reading a book the whole time I was on the train.
I cleaned the room while my mother was sleeping.
While I'm in Japan, I'd like to try going to a hot spring once.
Choose 間 when the main clause continues, and 間に when it happens once. Unlike 〜ながら, the two clauses can have different subjects.

The students were listening the whole time, a continuing action, so 間 is correct. 間に is for a one-time action, and ながら needs the masu-stem and the same subject. "While the teacher was talking, the students were listening quietly."
With a noun, use N + の + 間: 夏休みの間. "During summer vacation, I swam in the pool every day."
Seeing it once is a one-time action, so 間に is used. ながら cannot follow the dictionary form. "While I'm in Japan, I want to see Mt. Fuji once."
