〜がたい

Hard to ~ (emotionally or mentally)

วิธีสร้าง

  • Vます形 + がたい

คำอธิบาย

Means "even if one wants to, it is psychologically hard or almost impossible to ~." It is usually used with verbs of perception or feeling, such as 信じがたい, 許しがたい, 理解しがたい, 忘れがたい and 近づきがたい. It is somewhat formal and common in writing. For physical or technical difficulty, use 〜にくい.

  • あの真面目まじめな彼かれが会社かいしゃを急きゅうに辞やめるなんて、信しんじがたい話はなしだ。

    It's hard to believe that such a serious person would suddenly quit the company.

  • 連絡れんらくもしないで約束やくそくに一時間いちじかんも遅おくれるのは、許ゆるしがたい。

    Being an hour late for an appointment without even contacting me is hard to forgive.

  • 初はじめての海外旅行かいがいりょこうは、忘わすれがたい思おもい出でになった。

    My first trip abroad became an unforgettable memory.

  • 新あたらしい先生せんせいは少すこし近ちかづきがたい雰囲気ふんいきがある。

    The new teacher has a slightly unapproachable air.

ข้อควรรู้

It is not used for physical difficulty (✗ このペンは書きがたい → 書きにくい). かねる is about being unable because of one's position or circumstances; がたい is about being unable emotionally.
