If ~ were possible; if one dared to ~ (bad result)
There are two uses. (1) Potential form + ものなら: "if it were possible" about something very hard to realize, followed by a wish (〜たい) or a challenge (〜てみろ). できるものなら is common. (2) Volitional form + ものなら (〜ようものなら): "if one were to do such a thing," followed by a serious or unpleasant result. Both are stronger than a plain 〜たら.

Used when the speaker firmly judges that "this is what ~ really is" or "this is nothing but ~." It can state the essence of something (それが人生というものだ) or critically evaluate an action (〜なんて無理というものだ). After a verb, it means "(then) it will naturally be the case that ~." Used in writing or fairly formal speech.
