Do something for someone / have something done for you
Attaching あげる, くれる or もらう to the te-form turns a gift of a thing into a gift of an action. Vてあげる: I (or my side) do something for someone else. Vてくれる: someone else does something for me (or my side), and it shows thanks. Vてもらう: I receive an action from someone (marked with に), often because I asked.

Passive form (be done by someone)
The passive makes the person or thing receiving an action the subject; the doer is usually marked with に. Three main uses: (1) someone directly receives an action (be praised by the teacher); (2) the 'suffering' passive, showing you were troubled by something (have your foot stepped on, get caught in the rain); (3) stating facts with a thing as the subject (this temple was built long ago).
