ရှင်းလင်းချက်
There are three main uses. (1) An action happening now: 音楽を聞いています. (2) A state that continues after something happened: 東京に住んでいます, 結婚しています, 車を持っています. (3) A habit or job: 銀行で働いています. Verbs like 住む, 持つ and 知る are usually used in the 〜ています form.

今、弟は 部屋で 音楽を 聞いています。
My younger brother is listening to music in his room now.
佐藤さんは 東京に 住んでいます。
Sato-san lives in Tokyo.
姉は 銀行で 働いています。
My older sister works at a bank.
私は 車を 持っていません。
I don't have a car.
မှတ်ချက်
The answers to 知っていますか are はい、知っています and いいえ、知りません. Do not say 知っていません.

A: Do you know Mr. Yamada's phone number? B: No, I don't. The negative answer to 知っていますか is 知りません, not 知っていません. 1 and 2 contradict いいえ, and 3 uses a wrong te-form of 知る.
