A casual spoken form with several uses. (1) Quoting, instead of と: 'Come home early' って言われた. (2) At the end of a sentence, passing on what you heard (like そうだ). (3) Raising a topic, instead of は or というのは. All of these are casual.

It is casual, so in reports or work emails use と, という, or そうです instead. Sentence-final って said with rising intonation can also be a question asking what someone said.

Quiz
A: I heard tomorrow's class is cancelled. B: Really? Sentence-final って passes on information one heard, like そうだ. The other choices cannot follow 休みだ.
Do you know a person called Yamamoto? Before a noun, っていう replaces という, so 山本さんっていう人 means a person named Yamamoto.
The teacher said there will be a test tomorrow. This quotes what the teacher said, so って (casual と) is correct. を and が cannot follow a clause directly, and っけ does not fit.
