Today's grammar

〜は〜です

A is B (polite statement about a topic)

Formation
  • N1 + は + N2 + です

This is the most basic Japanese sentence: it says politely that A is B. は marks the topic (what the sentence is about); as a particle it is pronounced wa, not ha. です comes at the end and never changes with the subject, so it covers am, is and are. When the topic is clear from the situation, it is usually left out: リンです alone means "I'm Lin."

Examples

  • はじめまして。私わたしは リンです。

Nice to meet you. I am Lin.

  • 佐藤さとうさんは 会社員かいしゃいんです。

    Sato-san is an office worker.

Quiz

1「( )。わたしは リンです。」

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 はじめまして

When you meet someone for the first time and say your name, you begin with はじめまして (nice to meet you).

2わたし( ) マリアです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 は

The pattern is A は B です: わたしは マリアです (I am Maria). Here は is read wa. The other particles do not fit this sentence.

3日本人

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 にほんじん

日本人 is read にほんじん (Japanese person). After a country name, 人 is read じん, as in アメリカ人.

4( )は アリです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 なまえ

アリ is a person's name, so なまえは アリです (My name is Ali) is correct. A country or Japan cannot be アリ.

5たなかさんは 日本人にほんじん( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 です

A sentence in the A は B です pattern ends with です: たなかさんは 日本人です (Mr. Tanaka is Japanese).

6くには ( )です。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 日本にほん

くに means country, so 日本 (Japan) fits: "My country is Japan." 日本人 means a Japanese person, not a country.

7「わたしは たなかです。( )です。」

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 日本人にほんじん

わたしは is already in the first sentence, so 日本人です alone means "I'm Japanese." You cannot put は right before です.

8「はじめまして。わたしは アリです。( )。」

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 よろしくおねがいします

At the end of a self-introduction, you say よろしくおねがいします (pleased to meet you). おやすみなさい is said before going to bed.
