Today's grammar

〜ます・〜ません

Polite verb endings: do / will do; don't / won't

Formation
  • Vます形 + ます
  • Vます形 + ません

〜ます is the polite form of a verb, and 〜ません is its negative. This form is not only "present": it describes habits (毎朝 走ります, I run every morning) and future actions (明日 来ます, I'll come tomorrow). The form is the same for every subject. The verb comes at the end of the sentence. Make a question with 〜ますか and answer はい、〜ます or いいえ、〜ません.

Examples

  • 私わたしは 毎日まいにち 勉強べんきょうします。

    I study every day.

  • 田中たなかさんは 明日あした 来きません。

    Tanaka-san will not come tomorrow.

〜を

Marks the direct object of a verb

Formation
  • N + を + V

を marks the direct object: the thing that the action is done to (what you eat, what you watch, and so on). It comes right after the noun, in the pattern N を V, with the verb at the end. It is pronounced o, the same as お, but the particle is always written を. To ask about the object, say 何を 〜ますか (What do you ...?).

Examples

  • 私わたしは 毎朝まいあさ コーヒーを 飲のみます。

    I drink coffee every morning.

  • リンさんは 肉にくを 食たべません。

    Lin-san does not eat meat.

Quiz

1朝あさ、( )を 飲のみます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 コーヒー

The sentence means "In the morning, I drink coffee." Only コーヒー is a drink, so it goes with 飲みます. With パン and 朝ごはん, use 食べます (eat).

2パン( )食たべます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 を

The sentence means "I eat bread." The object of a verb (the thing you eat) is marked with を. の, か and です do not work here.

3A:いつも パンを 食たべますか。 B:いいえ、( ) 食たべます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 ときどき

A asks "Do you always eat bread?" B says いいえ (no), so B does not eat it always. ときどき 食べます (I eat it sometimes) fits. 何 and だれ are question words.

4A:コーヒーを 飲のみますか。 B:いいえ、( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 飲のみません

A asks "Do you drink coffee?" After いいえ (no), use the negative ません form of the same verb: 飲みません (I don't drink it). 食べません is a different verb (eat).

5朝ごはんを 食たべます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 あさ

朝 is read あさ (morning). 朝ごはん is あさごはん (breakfast). The sentence means "I eat breakfast."

6A:( )を 飲のみますか。 B:コーヒーを 飲のみます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 何なに

A asks "What will you drink?" and B answers "Coffee." To ask about a thing, use 何 (what). だれ asks about a person, どこ about a place, and どの needs a noun after it.

7私わたしは __ __ _★_ __ 食たべます。

The correct order is 3→4→1→2: 私は 日本の パンを 食べます (I eat Japanese bread). を comes right before 食べます. The star is パン.
