Placed at the start of a sentence to show the speaker's feeling about what follows. It is used with emotion words such as 驚いた, うれしい, 残念な, 困った, 不思議な and ありがたい. The rest of the sentence states a fact that actually happened. It is somewhat formal and common in writing and speeches.
驚いたことに、十年前の先生が私の名前を覚えていてくれた。
To my surprise, my teacher from ten years ago remembered my name.
うれしいことに、私たちの企画が社長に認められた。

私が住んでいる町は「龍川町」という。前からこの名前の由来が不思議だったので、図書館で調べてみた。The town I live in is called Tatsukawa. I had long wondered where the name came from, so I looked it up at the library.
町の真ん中を流れる川は、山の上から見ると大きく曲がっていて、長い龍の体のような形をしている。The river that flows through the middle of town curves widely when seen from the top of the mountain, and it is shaped like the long body of a dragon.
その形が龍に似ていることから、昔の人が「龍川」と名付けたそうだ。Because its shape looks like a dragon, people long ago apparently named it Tatsukawa, Dragon River.
驚いたことに、この町には今も龍が出てくる伝統行事が伝わっている。To my surprise, a traditional festival featuring a dragon is still handed down in this town today.
毎年夏になると、地元の子どもたちが紙で作った長い龍を持って、川に沿って町を歩くのだ。Every summer, local children carry a long dragon made of paper and walk through the town along the river.
図書館には、百年前の行事の写真も残っていた。今ではとても貴重な資料だそうだ。The library also had photos of the festival from a hundred years ago. They say these are now very valuable records.
その写真を見ていて、面白いことに気がついた。While looking at the photos, I noticed something interesting.
百年前の龍も今の龍も、なぜか怖い顔ではなく、笑った顔をしているのだ。For some reason, both the dragon from a hundred years ago and today's dragon have not a scary face but a smiling one.
図書館の人に聞くと、「昔、小さい子どもたちが龍を怖がって泣いたことから、笑った顔に変えたそうですよ」と教えてくれた。When I asked the librarian, she told me, "Long ago, small children were scared of the dragon and cried, so they say the face was changed to a smiling one."
残念なことに、今年の行事はもう終わってしまった。Unfortunately, this year's festival is already over.
来年の夏は、私もあの笑う龍といっしょに川のそばを歩いてみたい。Next summer, I'd like to walk beside the river with that smiling dragon too.
문장을 탭하면 해석이 나와요.
R1「龍川」という名前は、どうして付けられたのか。
정답: 2 川の形が龍の体に似ていたから
The text says people named it Tatsukawa because the shape of the river looks like a dragon. Option 3 is the reason the dragon's face was changed, not the origin of the name. Options 1 and 4 are not given as reasons.
R2行事の龍が笑った顔をしているのはなぜか。
정답: 4 怖い顔を見て小さい子どもが泣いたから
The librarian says the face was changed to a smiling one because small children were scared of the dragon and cried. The other reasons are not in the text.
1この祭りは、三百年も続いている町の( )行事だ。
정답: 2 伝統
This festival is a traditional event of the town that has continued for 300 years. 伝統行事 means a traditional event. 地元 and 貴重 would need の or な before 行事, and 由来行事 is not a word.
2この古い地図は、とても( )な資料なので、大切に保管されている。
정답: 4 貴重
This old map is a very valuable record, so it is carefully kept. 貴重 means rare and precious. 深刻 (serious), 柔軟 (flexible) and 慎重 (careful) do not describe a document here.
3桜の木が多い( )、この道は「桜通り」と呼ばれている。
정답: 1 ことから
Because there are many cherry trees, this street is called Sakura-dori. 〜ことから gives the reason or basis for a name or judgment. ことに follows feeling words, and からといって / からには do not fit the meaning.
4生まれた女の子を、祖父が「春香」と( )。
정답: 3 名付けた
Grandfather named the newborn girl Haruka. AをBと名付ける means to give A the name B. 伝わる does not take を, and 維持する (maintain) and 応募する (apply) do not fit.
5( )ことに、若いころの祖父の写真が見つかった。
정답: 2 うれしい
To my joy, a photo of my grandfather as a young man was found. ことに follows the dictionary form of an i-adjective, a na-adjective + な, or a verb in the た form, so うれしいことに is correct. The other forms cannot connect to ことに.
6地元の野菜を使った料理を出す店が増えている。
정답: 4 じもと
地元 is read じもと (local area). The sentence means "More and more restaurants serve dishes made with local vegetables."
7楽しみにしていたのに、( )、雨で花火大会は中止になった。
정답: 1 残念なことに
I was looking forward to it, but unfortunately, the fireworks festival was canceled because of rain. 残念なことに states the feeling first. ことから gives a reason and does not fit, and からこそ / からといって do not attach with な.
8町の名前のゆらいを図書館で調べた。
정답: 3 由来
ゆらい is written 由来 (origin). Be careful not to write 油, which looks similar to 由. The sentence means "I looked up the origin of the town's name at the library."
