い形容詞

Adjectives ending in い: polite, noun-modifying and negative forms

Formación
  • いA + です(高いです)
  • いA + N(高い 本)
  • いA(〜い → 〜く) + ないです/ありません(高くないです)
  • いいです → よくないです(例外)

い-adjectives end in い, like 大きい (big), 新しい (new) and おいしい (delicious). At the end of a sentence, add です to be polite: 高いです (it is expensive). Before a noun, use the adjective as it is: 高い 本 (an expensive book). For the negative, change the final い to く and add ないです: 高くないです. 高くありません is also possible. いい (good) is irregular: its negative is よくないです.

Ejemplos

  • この 店みせの ラーメンは とても おいしいです。

The ramen at this restaurant is very good.

Adjectives that take な before a noun

Formación

  • なA + じゃありません/ではありません(静かじゃありません)

な-adjectives are words like 静か (quiet), 元気 (healthy, lively), 有名 (famous), 便利 (convenient) and きれい (pretty, clean). At the end of a sentence they take です, just like nouns: 静かです. Before a noun they need な: 静かな 町 (a quiet town). The negative is also the same as for nouns: 静かじゃありません or 静かではありません. In conversation, 静かじゃないです is common too.

Ejemplos

Quiz

1夜よるの 図書館としょかんは 人ひとが いません。とても ( )です。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 2 静しずか

"There are no people in the library at night. It is very quiet." No people means 静か. にぎやか (lively) is the opposite. とても cannot come before a noun such as 町 or 部屋.

2この 建物たてものは 百年ひゃくねん前まえから あります。とても ( ) 建物たてものです。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 1 古ふるい

"This building has been here for 100 years. It is a very old building." 新しい (new) is the opposite. きれい needs な before a noun, and 町 is a noun.

3この 公園こうえんは ( ) 大おおきいです。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 4 とても

"This park is very big." とても (very) comes before an adjective. どれ, だれ and どこ are question words and do not fit here.

4私わたしの 町まちは ( ) 町まちです。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 3 静しずかな

"My town is a quiet town." 静か is a na-adjective, so it takes な before a noun: 静かな町.

5A:田中たなかさんの 部屋へやは 大おおきいですか。 B:いいえ、( )。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 2 大おおきくないです

"Is Tanaka-san's room big? No, it is not big." For an i-adjective, change the last い to くない: 大きくないです. じゃありません is for na-adjectives and nouns.

6この 町まちは にぎやか( )。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 4 じゃありません

"This town is not lively." にぎやか is a na-adjective, so the negative is にぎやかじゃありません. くないです is the i-adjective form.
