Be merely ~; no more than ~

Formación

  • N + にすぎない

This stresses that something is "only this and nothing more," that it is small or unimportant. It is often used to say an amount or number is small, as in 一部にすぎない. It can also be used to speak modestly about yourself. It is common in writing and formal speech.

Ejemplos

That is merely my personal opinion.

  • 日本語にほんごが話はなせると言いっても、簡単かんたんなあいさつができる にすぎない。

I say I can speak Japanese, but I can only manage simple greetings.

  • 社長しゃちょうと言いっても、社員しゃいんが五人ごにんの小ちいさな会社かいしゃの社長しゃちょう にすぎない。

I may be a company president, but it's just a small company with five employees.

What I saw on this trip was only a tiny part of this country.

Mini quiz

1私わたしはただ言いわれたことをした( )。特別とくべつなことは何なにもしていません。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 3 にすぎません

The speaker modestly says "I only did what I was told," so にすぎません fits: "I merely did what I was told. I didn't do anything special."

2この町まちの人口じんこうは約やく三千人さんぜんにん( )が、毎年まいとし多おおくの観光客かんこうきゃくが来くる。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 1 にすぎない

The speaker stresses the small number, so にすぎない is correct: "This town has only about 3,000 people, but many tourists come every year." わりに needs の after a noun and cannot be followed by が.

3それはただのうわさ( )。本当ほんとうかどうかは分わからない。

Respuesta y explicación

Respuesta: 4 にすぎない

With a noun, use に: うわさにすぎない. The sentence means "That is just a rumor. We don't know if it's true." The other choices are not correct forms.
