No wonder ~ / That means ~
There are two uses. (1) Understanding: when you learn the reason and think "So that's why ~ / No wonder ~." (2) Conclusion: stating the natural result of facts or numbers, "so that means ~," often with つまり or じゃあ. In both, the speaker connects a reason with its result.
窓が開いていた。部屋が 寒いわけだ。
The window was open. No wonder the room is cold.
リンさんは十年も日本に住んでいたそうだ。日本語が 上手なわけだ。
I hear Lin lived in Japan for ten years. No wonder her Japanese is so good.
It doesn't mean that ~ / not necessarily ~
This partly denies something the listener might assume: "That doesn't mean ~ / It's not that ~." It does not deny everything; it means "not all / not always / not necessarily." It is often followed by the real reason or situation: 〜わけではないが、…
料理が 嫌いなわけではないが、忙しくて作る時間がない。
It's not that I dislike cooking, but I'm too busy to have time to cook.
値段が高い店がいつも おいしいわけではない。
Expensive restaurants aren't always good.
アリ山田さん、毎日遅くまで残業していますね。Yamada-san, you work late every day.
山田うん、来週の金曜日が資料の締め切りなんだ。それに、明日は大事な会議もあるし。Yeah, the deadline for some documents is next Friday. And there's an important meeting tomorrow, too.
アリその資料は、山田さんの担当なんですか。Are you in charge of those documents?
山田いや、本当は上司の仕事なんだけど、「山田さん、お願い」と頼まれて……。No, it's actually my boss's job, but I was asked, "Yamada-san, please..."
アリなるほど。締め切りも近いし、上司の仕事もしているから、忙しいわけですね。I see. The deadline is close and you're doing your boss's work too, so no wonder you're busy.
