Means "since I have said/done ~" or "in front of ~." It expresses that, to keep face or stay consistent with one's position, one must (or cannot) do something. It is often followed by 〜わけにはいかない, 〜しかない, or 〜なければならない. It is also used with people, as in 子どもの手前 (in front of the children).

Since I keep telling my staff not to be late, I can't be late myself.
Having told my friends I would definitely pass, I have no choice but to study every day.
This is different from the place word 手前 (just before), as in 駅の手前. 〜以上 is similar, but 手前 strongly suggests concern about how one looks to others.

"Having said in front of everyone that I'd win, I can't skip practice." 手前 shows the need to keep face. 反面 (on the other hand), 最中 (in the middle of), and 途端 (just as) do not fit.
"In front of the customers, the manager couldn't scold the clerk loudly." 客の手前 means "because the customers are watching." The other choices do not make sense.
Sentence 1 means "Since I promised to teach my junior, I can't say I don't understand." 2 and 4 are simple causes, and 3 is about timing, so 手前 cannot be used.
