Explicación

Shows that something new is made, written, considered, or decided using some material, experience, or story as a source or hint. It is followed by verbs that create something, such as 作る, 書く, 考える, or 決める. Because it is source material, the result may differ freely from the original. Before a noun it becomes をもとにした.

Ejemplos

この映画えいがは、実際じっさいにあった話はなしをもとに作つくられた。

This movie was based on a true story.
アンケートの結果けっかをもとにして、新あたらしいメニューを考かんがえた。

We came up with a new menu based on the survey results.
祖母そぼから聞きいた昔むかしの話はなしをもとに、絵本えほんを書かいた。

I wrote a picture book based on old stories I heard from my grandmother.
日本にほんの昔話むかしばなしをもとにしたゲームが、子こどもたちに人気にんきだ。

A game based on Japanese folk tales is popular with children.

Notas

It is similar to に基づいて, but をもとに is for creating something from material; it is not usually used for following laws or rules.
