解說
The plain form is the style without です and ます. It has two main uses. (1) Casual speech with friends and family. Questions usually drop か and end with rising intonation (行く?), and はい and いいえ become うん and ううん. (2) Inside grammar patterns such as 〜と思います (I think) and 〜と言いました (said that): the part before the pattern is in the plain form even when the sentence as a whole is polite.
例句
A: 明日、学校へ 行く?
B: ううん、行かない。A: Are you going to school tomorrow? B: No, I'm not.
昨日の テストは とても 難しかった。
Yesterday's test was very difficult.
今日は 休みだ。仕事は ない。
Today is a day off. There is no work.
A: 旅行は どうだった?
B: とても 楽しかった。ホテルも きれいだった。A: How was your trip? B: It was a lot of fun. The hotel was nice and clean, too.
注意
Do not add だ to い-adjectives (× 高いだ). In casual questions with な-adjectives and nouns, だ is dropped (× 元気だ? → ○ 元気?). Do not use casual plain speech with teachers or people you are meeting for the first time.

小測驗
1「食べませんでした」の 普通形は どれですか。
答案與解析
答案: 2 食べなかった
The plain form of 〜ませんでした is made by changing ない to なかった: 食べない → 食べなかった. 食べない is the plain form of 食べません (non-past), and the other two forms do not exist.
2A: 昨日の 映画、おもしろかった?
B: ううん、あまり ( )。
答案與解析
答案: 3 おもしろくなかった
A asks "Was yesterday's movie interesting?" and B answers "No, not very." The plain negative past of an い-adjective is 〜くなかった: おもしろくなかった. じゃなかった and だった are for な-adjectives and nouns.
3普通形の 文で、正しい ものは どれですか。
答案與解析
答案: 4 明日は 休みだ。
Sentence 4, "Tomorrow is a day off," is correct: a noun takes だ. The others should be 高い (no だ after an い-adjective), 食べない (plain negative of a verb) and 静かだった (past of a な-adjective).
