Must / have to do ~ (obligation or necessity)

  • Vない形（〜ない → 〜なければ）+ なりません

〜なければなりません means that something must be done because of a rule, a promise or the situation: "must / have to." There are two negatives (〜ない and なりません), but the meaning is not negative: 行かなければなりません means "I have to go." It can describe your own duties as well as general rules. To make it, change ない of the ない-form to なければ and add なりません.

  • 明日あしたは 朝あさ 五時ごじに 起おきなければなりません。

〜なくてもいいです

Don't have to do ~ (no need to)

  • Vない形（〜ない → 〜なくて）+ も + いいです

〜なくてもいいです means "you don't have to ~" or "there is no need to ~." It is the opposite of 〜なければなりません: nothing is wrong if you do not do it. The question 〜なくてもいいですか asks whether it is all right not to do something. Be careful not to confuse it with 〜てはいけません, which means "must not." To make it, change ない of the ない-form to なくて and add もいいです.

  • 明日あしたは 休やすみです。朝あさ 六時ろくじに 起おきなくてもいいです。

    Tomorrow is a day off. I don't have to get up at six in the morning.

  • この 部屋へやでは 靴くつを 脱ぬがなくてもいいです。
