Links two nouns: possession, affiliation, or type
の joins two nouns. In N1 の N2, the first noun describes the second, and N2 is the main noun. It shows the owner (私の 本, my book), the group someone belongs to (大学の 先生, a university teacher), the kind or content (日本語の 本, a Japanese-language book), and many other relations. When N2 is obvious, you can leave it out: 私のです means "It's mine."

My name is Maria.
アリさんは 日本語学校の 学生です。
Ali-san is a student at a Japanese language school.
アリリンさん、これは リンさんの かぞくの しゃしんですか。Lin, is this a photo of your family?
リンはい、そうです。これは わたしの おとうさんです。Yes, it is. This is my father.
アリこれは おねえさんですか。Is this your older sister?
リンいいえ、おねえさんじゃありません。おかあさんです。No, that's not my older sister. It's my mother.
アリえ! おかあさんですか! じゃ、これは おにいさんですか。What! Your mother?! Then is this your older brother?
リンいいえ、おとうとです。おとうとは 十さいです。No, it's my younger brother. He is ten years old.

Lin answers いいえ、おねえさんじゃありません。おかあさんです (No, that's not my sister. It's my mother). She looks like a sister, but she is Lin's mother.

Ken (6) is younger than Lin (9), so he is Lin's おとうと (younger brother). おにいさん is an older brother.

子ども is read こども (child): "The child is seven years old." し is another reading of 子 used in other words.

リンさんの ペン means Lin's pen: "This is Lin's pen." の goes between two nouns to show whose it is.

おとうとの なまえ means my younger brother's name: "My younger brother's name is Ken." まで and から are used for things like times.

わたしの しゃしん means my photo: "This is my photo." The other choices do not connect two nouns.

B「いいえ、おねえさん( ) ノートじゃありません。おにいさんの ノートです。」

B says おねえさんの ノートじゃありません (It's not my older sister's notebook). It has the same shape as おにいさんの ノート (my older brother's notebook).
