Dictionary form: the basic, plain non-past verb form

  • 1グループ: ます形けいの い段だん → う段だん（書かきます → 書かく、飲のみます → 飲のむ、買かいます → 買かう、話はなします → 話はなす、待まちます → 待まつ）
  • 2グループ: ます → る（食たべます → 食たべる、見みます → 見みる）
  • 3グループ: します → する、来きます → 来くる

The dictionary form is the basic form of a verb, the one listed in dictionaries. It is the plain (non-polite) equivalent of 〜ます, used with friends and family. Many patterns also need it, such as 〜ことができます and 〜前に. For Group 1 verbs, change the sound before ます from the い-row to the う-row (き → く, み → む). For Group 2 verbs, replace ます with る.

  • 私わたしは 毎朝まいあさ コーヒーを 飲のむ。

    I drink coffee every morning. (casual)

  • 明日あした 友ともだちと 映画えいがを 見みる。

    I'm going to watch a movie with a friend tomorrow. (casual)

〜ことができます has two uses. One is a person's ability: 泳ぐことができます (I can swim). The other is that something is possible or allowed in a certain place or situation: この 図書館では 本を 借りることができます (You can borrow books at this library). Add こと to the dictionary form of a verb. Nouns such as 日本語, 料理, スキー and テニス take が directly: N が できます. The negative is 〜ことができません.

  • リンさんは 漢字かんじを 読よむことができます。

    Lin-san can read kanji.

  • 私わたしは 泳およぐことができません。

    I can't swim.

アリ私わたしの 趣味しゅみは 料理りょうりを 作つくる ことです。ギターを 弾ひく ことも できます。でも、泳およぐ ことは できません。My hobby is cooking. I can also play the guitar. But I can't swim.

マリアじゃ、土曜日どようびに 私わたしの 家いえに 来きませんか。アリさんは 料理りょうりを 作つくって、ギターを 弾ひいてください。Then why don't you come to my place on Saturday? Please cook and play the guitar.

アリえっ、料理りょうりも ギターも 私わたしですか。マリアさんは 何なにを しますか。What? I do both the cooking and the guitar? What will you do, Maria-san?

マリア私わたしは 歌うたを 歌うたいます。それから、アリさんの 料理りょうりを たくさん 食たべます！I'll sing. And then I'll eat lots of your cooking!
